Children can be notoriously picky eaters, it’s true, there is no getting away from the fact that faced with a new dish many will turn up their noses and stubbornly refuse to let the choo choo or airplane in. With this in mind it is good to know that when staying away from home there is hope that this will provide an opportunity for a child to try something new.
A trip to Devon could inspire any little person to test new foods. It might just be a dippy egg and soldiers at breakfast in your Devon B&B or it might be a first taste of fish from the fresh fish and chips on the Quay in Appledore. If the savoury options do not intrigue it may be time to turn to a sweeter treat, the delicious and irresistible Hockings ice cream, made with local clotted cream or a traditional Devon cream tea. What child could resist an ice cream with a chocolate flake or a jammy scone dolloped with thick cream?
The only snag when it comes to pushing the culinary boundaries whilst on holiday is that when returning back to normal at home it may be difficult to emulate the Devon B&B that made the best breakfast or the fish and chips that were so fresh and tasty. It may be that mum and dad will need to get out the recipe books and keep up the momentum.
Cooked breakfasts at the weekend when time is less precious or baking scones on a Sunday for afternoon tea won’t just offer new taste experiences for the youngest pickiest eaters it will also liberate the cooks of the family to broaden their culinary horizons.
Who would have thought a simple holiday to Devon could give you so much inspiration? Well it really did work for us, we sent Easter at a stunning holiday cottage right on the coast. This was a really last second deal, but we hadn’t had a break in a while and we thought why not! We packed up the car (it’s amazing how much a baby needs) with his quinny buzz buggy and his travel cot, which has to be one of our best buys and we headed down the M5 to a lovely little town on the north coast of Devon called Croyde, which is really popular with the surfing crowd!
We found the whole week to be fantastic and very baby friendly, there really is so much to do and the area is really clean! This was one my favourite weekend breaks so far!

It might be early but it seems like summer could be here already. Ours is not to question why this is the case but it does give an opportunity to break out the children’s Spring/Summer trends for this unexpected season so our lovely little people do not over heat.
A day on the beach at Saunton Sands on the largely undiscovered north Devon coast gives the perfect occasion to give the nautical stripes that small people are rocking this season a chance to see the sunshine. There is a fabulous park in Bideford with an outdoor pool, perfect for showcasing the latest swimwear trends –be careful to take off those retro sunglasses before getting wet!
